A Matter of Terroir

Alta Vista Vineyard LocationsI recently organized a tasting of the single vineyard wines of Alta Vista in order to better understand Malbec’s expression in different vineyards.  Many thanks to Emilio Arrieta of the importer G.W. Yichang for helping organize this educational tasting.  The wines tasted were the 2007 Alizarine (Luján de Cuyo), 2010 Serenade (Luján de Cuyo), 2007 Temis (Valle de Uco), and the 2009 Terroir Selection (a blend of the aforementioned vineyards plus Albaneve Vineyard (Valle de Uco).  The Albaneve bottling is unavailable in Peru. My tasting notes are included below.

Alta Vista Malbec Alizarine 2007 (Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina)
Deep purple violet in color, just starting to show some signs of evolution.  On the nose this wine shows notes of fresh black fruits of plum and fig, and is quite floral with distinctive herbal notes of oregano and thyme, and black tea.  Lovely minerality and very elegant on the nose.  The elegance continues through on the palate with silky tannins.  (dry red wine, 14.5% alcohol, natural cork closure)

Alta Vista Malbec Serenade 2010 (Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina)
Very deep purple violet in color this wine shows it youth.  On the nose this wine shows notes of plum sauce and blackberry jam, and has a distinct note of licorice.  Although very young the tannin structure is nicely integrated, and this wine will surely develop nicely over the next ten years.  (dry red wine, 15.0% alcohol, natural cork closure)

Alta Vista Malbec Temis 2007 (Valle de Uco, Mendoza, Argentina)
Deep purple violet in color, my first impression of this wine on the nose was mineral. Distinct notes of crushed gravel and granite frame a fruit structure of red and black fruits of raspberry and blackberry with plum paste and fig.  This wine is richly extracted but maintains its elegance.  (dry red wine, 15.0% alcohol, natural cork closure)

Alta Vista Malbec Terroir Selection 2009 (Mendoza, Argentina)
A blend of Alta Vista’s four single vineyards this wine is principally composed from the Albaneve vineyard.  It is quite deep purple violet in color.  On the nose it shows notes of blackberry and black plum with a hint of fig.  There is also a distinct herbal note of cured tobacco and cedar which reminds one of old world wines.  On the palate the wine is quite muscular and full-bodied.  (dry red wine, 15.5% alcohol, natural cork closure)
